GM10 – Fox lifts Rangers in overtime

Adam Fox unleashed a powerful slap shot from above the right circle to ring up an overtime victory for the Rangers against the Canucks. The 4-3 win at Vancouver extended the Rangers winning streak to four as they end the first stretch games.

After a first period scoring frenzy, the Canucks took a 3-2 lead into the middle frame, and with 42 seconds remaining in the period, defenseman Patrick Nemeth scored for New York to tie the game 3-3. Neither team scored in the third period to force overtime.

Fox’s game-winner occurred 3:02 into the extra period. The overtime win was the Rangers’ second victory in three games after defeating the Blue Jackets 2-1 in Columbus. It was Fox’s fourth goal of the season.

Gm7 – Rangers return home for much-needed win

In need of a win after a challenging road trip, the New York Rangers defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 at Madison Square Garden. Adam Fox’s goal 1:48 into the third period tied the score 1-1 and Ryan Strome put in the go-ahead goal less than two minutes later to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead. Sammy Blais added an empty-netter to seal the win.

THREE THINGS:

• New York entered the night returning from a four-game road trip in which they went 1-3. 
• The 1st defensive line came through: Lindgren and Fox scored
• Rangers outshot an opponent and won in the face-off circle for first time in three games

Gm4 – Rangers bounce back from massive loss to shut out Toronto

Igor Shesterkin bounced back from a disastrous night in goal to shut out the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 at Scociabank Arena. The Rangers and Shesterkin were roughed up the night before when he allowed 5 goals (and backup Alexandar Georgiev allowed 3) and New York lost 8-3 to Montreal.

Toronto entered the night undefeated in their first three games of the season.

After a scoreless first period, Kaapo Kakko lit the lamp near the end of the second period for rack his first of the season. Alexis Lafreniere and Filip Chytil added goals in the final frame. 

The game was plagued by penalties, but the Rangers defended well a man short, stopping the both Maple Leafs power play chances. The Rangers came up short on 5 of 6 power plays.

Opening Night – Rangers handle Capitals with near shutout

Goalie Igor Shesterkin lost his shutout bid seconds before the end of the game but still racked the win in the New York Rangers 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena. Tom Wilson scored with just a second remaining to record the Capitals first goal of the season.

Before the goal was allowed, Shesterkin had stopped 27 shots by the Capitals.  Adam Fox’s  goal 6:25 into the third period turned out to be key in the Rangers’ win. It gave New York a 2-0 lead. The Rangers’ first goal was scored by Barclay Goodrow 11:31 into the first frame.

Alex Ovechkin was kept out of the goal scoring column. The 16-year veteran with 730 career goals was seeking to move up in the all-time goal scoring list made 4 shots, and put 3 hits on Rangers’ players. 

Capitals goalie Ilya Samsonov made 23 of 25 saves and took the loss.
