Northwestern holds off Indiana 30-28 for first Big Ten victory
EVANSTON, IL — Northwestern bounced back from its first loss of the season Saturday, holding off previously unbeaten Indiana 30-28 in a closely contested Big Ten matchup.
One week after struggling in a 21-13 loss at Colorado, quarterback Luke Kromenhoek responded with 267 passing yards and three touchdowns against one interception to lead the Wildcats to their first conference victory.
Marcus Romain also provided a boost to Northwestern's offense, finishing with 137 total yards as the Wildcats found enough production to overcome the Hoosiers.
Special teams played a significant role in the victory. Kicker Jake Walters accounted for 12 points, including a 47-yard field goal that proved especially valuable in the two-point win.
Indiana kept the pressure on Northwestern behind a strong performance from Quinton Martin Jr., who rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown while adding 72 receiving yards.
Hoosiers quarterback Raphael Garland also challenged the Wildcats' defense, throwing for 241 yards and two touchdowns with one interception while averaging 11.5 yards per pass attempt.
Despite Indiana's offensive production, Northwestern did enough to preserve the narrow victory and avoid a second consecutive defeat.
The win improved Northwestern to 3-1, while Indiana suffered its first loss and also moved to 3-1.
Northwestern gets additional preparation time before facing Michigan on Oct. 7 at 6:45 p.m., looking to build on its conference-opening victory.
