Unranked Maryland outlasts No. 9 Northwestern in Big Ten shootout

Luke Kromenhoek’s big day wasn’t enough as the Wildcats fell despite 281 combined yards from their quarterback and two rushing scores.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Northwestern came in with a significant edge on paper, but the Wildcats left SECU Stadium with a 38-31 loss to Maryland in a game that featured heavy rain but little interruption to either offense.

The Wildcats still got a strong performance from Luke Kromenhoek, who passed for 179 yards on 20-of-32 throwing and rushed for 102 yards and two scores on only eight carries. Mar'Kel Porter added 101 total yards as Northwestern moved the ball effectively but could not keep pace late.

For Maryland, Malik Washington threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, while Jaquari Lewis accounted for 89 total yards. The Terrapins’ offense held up through the conditions and finished with enough production to secure the win.

The loss dropped Northwestern to 5-3, while Maryland improved to 4-4 and won for the second straight week. The Wildcats next face Wisconsin on Saturday, while the Terrapins are set to meet Ohio State.
