Little movement of top talent defines the day

Of the top 10 players on the trading block entering Trade Deadline day, only two were moved: Adam Pelech (Islanders), and Adam Larsson (Kraken), both Defensive Defensemen.

Pelech, who has 6yrs, 5.75M left on his contract, was traded to the Capitals for 36-year-old C Nicklas Bäckström.

Larsson, a 1st round pick by New Jersey in 2011 and has 2yrs, 4.00M remaining on his contract, was traded to Winnipeg, a team in the thick of the playoff race in the East. Along with Larrson, the Kraken also traded 44-year old C Joe Thornton.

Staying Put

Surprisingly, there were no takers for the top four assets on the trading block, all of which will hit the free agent market at the end of the season.

  • C Sebastian Aho, 90, Carolina, 1yr, 8.13M
  • RW Timo Meier, 88, San Jose, 1yr, 8.11M
  • RW Phil Kessel, 86, New Jersey, 1yr, 2.67M
  • D Tony DeAngelo, 87, Philadelphia, 1yr, 4.88M

Philadelphia, San Jose, and Columbus were interested in trading for Sebastian Aho but Carolina wanted a 1st Round pick in return. That price may have been too steep for the Sharks and Flyers who could be in rebuild mode next season.

Aho stays put

Carolina center Sebastian Aho was the top player on the trading block at the Trade Deadline. The Hurricanes wanted a 1st round pick in return but couldn't find a taker. Aho will enter the offseason as one of the top free agents.

Best picks acquired

  • Arizona — Acquired Minnesota’s 2024 2nd Round Pick
  • San Jose — Acquired Buffalo’s 2025 2nd Round Pick
  • Philadelphia — Acquired Arizona’s 2024 2nd Round Pick (MTL) then traded it to Boston for LW M. Petrov and 2024 3rd and 4th round picks.
  • Anaheim — Acquired Chicago’s 2nd Round Pick (VAN)

Most Active Clubs

Arizona, Boston, Buffalo, and Washington were the most active clubs and each was involved in three separate transactions. Of those clubs, the Sabres are in the best position to make the playoffs.

Buffalo acquired RW Kevin Labanc (SJS), and RW Josh Anderson (MTL) in separate deals. Buffalo’s other move was to trade their 2025 3rd Rd Pick (SJS), a 4th Rd Pick (MTL), and C D. Sundqvist to the Toronto for D Topi Niemela, and backup G Scott Ratzlaff.

Update: The Sabres climbed from 7th-place on Trade Deadline day to 3rd-place at the end of the regular season. Arizona, Boston, and Washington missed the playoffs.

Teams that made no moves at the Deadline
  • East Clubs: Tampa Bay (2nd), Pittsburgh (9th), NY Rangers (3rd), New Jersey (14th), Florida (8th), Detroit (4th)
  • West Clubs: Nashville (12th), Colorado (9th)

Carolina raises the White Flag, but no one responds

The Hurricanes made it to the Stanley Cup Final last season then lost to the Calgary Flames. Hope for another playoffs run faded early for them this year as they rolled into the Trade Deadline in last place. They were sellers and put two top players on the block: C Sebastian Aho (1yr, 8.13M), and D Jacob Slavin (2yrs, 5.06M). The ‘Canes were seeking a 1st-round pick, but couldn’t move either as various talks broke down.

Chicago prepares for departure of Kane

RW Patrick Kane re-signed with the Blackhawks for 1-year, 8.15M. Kane will hit the FA market at the end of the season and will likely be wearing a new uniform next season. In the meantime, Chicago traded 22-year old defenseman Alex Vlasic and a 2024 2nd round pick to Anaheim for playmaker C Ryan Strome (4yrs, 5.00M). It was a surprise move in that Strome was not on the block, and was the Ducks assist leader (7g/37a/44pts in 64 games with ANA).

Update: The Blackhawks fell several spots and barely made the playoffs as the 8th seed in the West. The would lose in the 1st round to Calgary.
