New York ended a 30-year drought and won the 2024 Stanley Cup after defeating the Canucks by a 3-2 score in Game 5 at Rogers Arena to win the series 4-1. Filip Chytil broke a 2-2 with 37 seconds left to play then the Rangers succeeded in keeping the puck in Vancouver’s zone to prevent them from removing their goalie while burning out the final seconds.
During the regular season, the Rangers’ lowest place in the standings was 7th at the start of January, but never ended any month higher than 3rd place. The Rangers’ were near the bottom at scoring goals, but they made up for it by having the best defense and conceding 2.40 GAPG. Only Toronto was better (2.39 GAPG). Goalie Igor Shesterkin finished the regular season as the top goalie (39-26-4, 2.25, 10 shutouts) and went on to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Stanley Cup MVP.
The New York Rangers (51-26-5, 103 pts) capped a successful regular season, and a 2nd-place finish in the Eastern Conference, with a disappointing early exit from the playoffs. After breezing through the first round against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Rangers failed to end the Carolina Hurricanes in the East semi-final when they had the chance. New York took a 3-2 lead in the series, then lost two straight and were eliminated. The Rangers were ahead on the scoreboard in Games 6 and 7 before letting leads slip away late each time.
