Kaapo Kakko scored a power play goal in overtime to lift the Rangers to a 2-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

  • Matthew Robertson recorded 24:26 TOI, and finished with 3 hits and a +1.
  • Backup goalie Jaroslav Halak earned the victory (11 saves) in his first start of preseason.

Pregame WTWF. 21-year old defenseman Matthew Robertson was called up to play on the 3rd D-line with Andy Welinski. The 21 year-old left handed defenseman was selected by the Blueshirts in the second round of the 2019 Draft. At 6-4 and 201 lbs, he already has the size to play in the NHL but has taken a little more time to develop than some of the other prospects on the blue-line.

NHL: Quick preseason starts for three players

C Alex Newhook (Avalanche), C/RW Nathan McKinnon (Avalanche), and LW/RW Mike Hoffman (Canadiens) all scored 3 goals in their first preseason games. Newhook and McKinnon led Colorado to a 8-1 win over Minnesota, while Hoffman’s efforts carried Montreal past Detroit by a 5-3 final.

Preseason Opener — Rangers pull out last-second victory

Sammy Blais scored his second of the game with two seconds remaining in regulation to give the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils. Blais’s winning-goal came after the Rangers had blown a 2-0 lead — conceding two scores by the Devils in the third period.

Oliver Tarnstrom opening the scoring with a goal 15:93 into the first frame to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Blais made it 2-0 with a second period tap in with 3 minutes before the second intermission.

New Jersey struck quickly in the third period with Damon Severson and A Johnson lighting the lamp within the first six minutes. With overtime looming, Ryder Horczak carried the puck into the Devils’ zone and launched a slap shot from the right circle. Devils’ goalie Giles Senn knocked the shot away with his stick, but Blais was there first and guided the rebound under Senn’s stick arm for the goal.

The win came at a cost. Alexis Lafreniere (shoulder) and Zac Jones (neck) suffered injuries that will limit their playing time for a few days.
