Game 7 – Pittsburgh 2, NY Rangers 1

Evgeni Malkin scored a power play goal on a 3-1 breakaway with 25 seconds to play to give Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead. With 6.6 seconds remaining, goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped a point-blank shot to preserve the lead, and the Rangers dropped their final preseason game. Kaapo Kakko score NYR’s lone goal in the 1st period. (Note: Varlamov signed with the Penguins this offseason).

Game 6 – NY Islanders 3, NY Rangers 1

The Islanders won the preseason version of “The Battle for New York”, defeating the Rangers 3-1 behind two Josh Bailey goals. The Islanders had the better defense early, allowing just two first period shots. Benjamin Ottman’s redirected shot accounted for NYR’s lone score.

Game 5 – Carolina 3, NY Rangers 2 (SOL)

The Rangers lost their first preseason shootout in a visit to Carolina where the fell 3-2. It was the first time they two teams have faced each other since the Hurricanes knocked the Rangers out of the playoffs last season. Both of New York’s goals came on power plays.

Game 4 – NY Rangers 2, Washington 1 (OT)

Center Johnny Brodzinski was the overtime hero when he beat Cam Talbot with a snap shot from the crease 4:22 into the extra period, giving the Rangers a 2-1 win over Washington. New York also got their first look at center Ryan O’Reilly in a Capitals’ uniform (he signed a 1-year deal in offseason). O’Reilly recorded 2 shots, 1 hit, and a -1 plus/minus.

Game 3 – Philadelphia 2, NY Rangers 1

The Flyers won a shootout to defeat the Rangers 2-1. New York took a 1-0 lead into the 3rd period before surrendering the tying goal by Morgan Frost nine minutes into the frame. Philly won the shootout 2-1.

Game 2 – Columbus 2, NY Rangers 1

The Blue Jackets jumped a head 2-0 in the first period and road the lead to a 2-1 win. Artemi Panarin scored his first preseason goal for New York. Patrick Laine notched his 3rd goal of the preseason for the Blue Jackets.

The Rangers scored three unanswered goals, all in the middle period, and went on to a 3-2 victory over the Devils.
