Opening Night – Rangers survive 6 penalties to win in OT

The Rangers were lucky to escape Opening Night with a victory. New York conceded two goals while on the penalty kill six times, and defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 in overtime. K’Andre Miller scored the game-winner.

Kaapo Kakko slotted the first goal of the season for the Rangers 3:02 into the first frame. The 1-0 lead was short-lived. Corey Perry tied the game 1-1 three minutes later. Chris Kreider broke the tie less than a minute into the second period, but the Lightning would tie again (2-2) before the next intermission.

In the third period, Steve Stamkos and Artemi Panarin notched first goals of the season to set up overtime. At the 3:03 mark of OT, Jacob Trouba sent a pass from the right circle into the path of Miller charging down the slot. Miller then used a snap shot to beat goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy on the stick side.
